Köln ... / Cologne
A city that has history and heart.
Cologne, one of Germany's oldest cities, looks back on an impressive history. Founded in 50 AD as the Roman colony 'Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium', it quickly developed into an important trade and administrative center. In the Middle Ages, Cologne gained great importance as a trading metropolis and ecclesiastical center, which is reflected in the construction of the famous Cologne Cathedral, whose foundation stone was laid as early as 1248. Despite severe destruction in World War II, the city grew into a modern metropolis after reconstruction.
Today, Cologne has around 1.1 million inhabitants and is the fourth largest city in Germany. As an important economic location, it is home to numerous companies from the media, automotive, chemical and insurance sectors. In addition, the city attracts numerous visitors with its vibrant art and culture scene. Cologne is particularly well-known for its annual carnival, which is considered the 'fifth season' and delights locals and tourists alike.
Among the most famous sights is the imposing Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a landmark of the city. The Hohenzollern Bridge with its countless love locks, the historic old town with its rustic breweries, and the Chocolate Museum are further highlights that make Cologne a unique city. Sport also plays a major role, especially the football club 1. FC Köln, whose fans are known for their passion.
With its mix of history, culture and Rhenish joie de vivre, Cologne is a city that delights and welcomes people from all over the world.
